The Japanese artist Hokusai created thousands of prints during his prolific career. From about 1826 to 1833, he created a famous series entitled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Included in this series is The Breaking Wave Off Kanagawa—or, more simply, The Great Wave. It portrays a scene in which a large wave dwarfs Mount Fuji, seen in the background, while it threatens to destroy boats beneath it. Hokusai's works include some of the finest examples of Japanese landscape printmaking. Note the self-similarity between the large wave and the smaller wavelets. - Paul Calter, Squaring the Circle
